Women in Iran

I had some post about the way Iranian women wear Hijab on my older blog but these days it is a hot topic in Iran. THEY started to involve with women who wear tight uniform and make up or in the other words women in attractive appearance. What really make a woman attractive?! Wearing light colors, make up, visible hair, tight cloth…Right! You found the answer of your question that why most of Iranian women wear black!

As a Muslim girl, I choose to have a suitable appearance in the way my religion asks but I do not agree with something they ask Iranian Woman to do. If THEY let women to appear in their optional way, they would never make such stupid styles. A Compulsory Hijab never works!

Light colors, make up, visible hair, tight cloth: isn't all this very superficial?
What makes Persian women attractive is an inner light that makes them shine like a sun: a mix of natural beauty and education in its widest sense.
No hijab will ever be able to hide it.
But those who force women to wear hijab are probably too blind to see it.

Yeah! You are right. This is THEIR idea which is transmitted to the public. People should do whatever public say, unfortunately!

I agree with Θάνος Δ., a person is beautiful because of who she is, not what she wears. So maybe what she wears doesn't matter. But the discussion is not really about clothing, or appearance, or whether or not a woman tempts a man. It is about freedom of choice, isn't it?

Of course it is about freedom. But I simply meant: even if we accept their goal, they will not achieve it by forcing women to wear hijab (unless their goal is just to force women to wear hijab of course…), and surely not in Iran which has for example the largest % of women going to university amongst Muslim countries, if my memory is good. And our dear architect is a perfect example of that: persian soul is stronger than hijab.

You mentioned exactly what I had in my mind! the problem is freedom of choice. Ther's a nice sentence in our holy Quran that say "لا اکراه فی الدین" meanse there's no constraint in accepting Islam. It's a good example that shows God created man free so how a government can devastate it?!

oooh. sensitive topic indeed. Unfortunately you need influential males to give females freedom of wearing what they want.

Love your photos today and the discussion, Sarah. I have been following the debate that the country of France has been having, with the French government wishing to outlaw the wearing of Hijab in public settings because to them it represents a limitation on their highly held value of equality of men and women (the French motto is Liberty, Equality, Franternity). As an American on the west coast of my country where so many cultures live together without having such constraints and where women and girls wear Hijab and all other manner of clothing as they or their family wishes. Women and teens wear beach attire or even pajamas outdoors, you see Asian monks and Mennonite style attire, business suits and jeans, whatever they wish. The limiting of what people can wear by the government seems off base in both directions. It doesn't matter if it is the Iranian government or the French government telling women what they can or can't wear. . .it is folly for either to work in this manner of attempting to legislate the changes they want to see in attitude. They will not succeed in anything except gaining the resentment of those upon whom they attempt to force such legislation. I feel all people should be able to wear what they wish to express who they are and what their personal beliefs are without restriction. Great thought provoking post!

@Kim: I understand your point of view and I am not in favour of any law about the hijab. But the problem is not as simple: sometimes, even if governments do not force women to wear or not to wear the hijab, women can be forced to wear it by their family or their religious or ethnical group. This is what people in France will tell you about this french law: “if we were sure these muslim women wear the hijab because they really want it, why not? but we have to protect those who do not want to wear it and wear it because they are forced to.'
Freedom: a deep subject…

PS: the french law is not about the iranian hijad but about the afghan burqa, if I can call them like this, that is the burqa as it was worn by women in Afghanistan under the Talebans.

This is a fascinating discussion. Kim is right, people wear whatever they want to wear here in the US, as long as they obey "common decency." But common decency is a different concept from one society to the next--it's even different on the west coast than it is in a small Midwestern town, for example. Interesting to think about.

Thank you all, You made an interesting discussion!
The real muslims women love their hijab and have it in their own way! for example myself, I wear uniform (not always dark colors, because Islam never forbid light colors for women!!!!), often jean pants and scarf. Some women lile to wear Chador (black gown) that I do not really appreciate it!
We are not even allowed to wear coat and skirt with scarf, so we do not have a variety of choice for our hijab. It was just about the Muslim women who like to have hijab but the main problem is with those Muslims who do not like to wear it! They do not have any option and MUST wear hijab beacuse THEY made it as a LAW!
Even the women who are not muslim have to do that, and also foreign tourists must obey it!

You have to be comfortable with yourself. I think, we in the West, are too far in the wrong direction.

i'm a muslim too and wear hijab..in my understanding, islam does not force people to embrace islam, but once you embrace islam, you have to follow the way islam leads the life. Islam is a simple and moderate religion. If we are following everything stated in Quran and Hadith, our life is going to be simple and full of blessing. Hijab is just a part of Islamic law in order to protect modesty of woman. However it might be different in Iran as it become a law by government to wear hijab. But for me it is still a good thing. May be freedom of choice should be given in choosing colors and style because if you come to my country a lot of people wearing hijab freely but with different colors and stlye..I'm really looking forward to visit Iran as my next destination because i really amazed with all the stories about how woman there leads their life..

Hope Allah will forgive us and give HIS blessing to all of us...
